FROM ME, FANNY McELROY -- P.S. Sister Alma Rose says that I am an Exceptional Child and that's why she makes me -- no, wait, URGES me to do a lot of plodding things like dig up ALL the weeds and polish the silver so that there is NO tarnish showing AT ALL. She says that Exceptional Children often become Unexceptional Adults because things come easily to them, the Exceptional Children, and they never learn to Plod, and it is the Plodders who are the happiest and most successful adults.

Xiousgeonz -- Rereading your amazing poem, another comment or two: Rhymed couplets can be tedious, or trite, or singsong-y, but yours are not, nor are the rhymes contrived. The penultimate five-line stanza, deviating from the conventions of the rest of the poem, is very effective, especially since you poetically and metaphorically return, in the final stanza, (a) to the rhyme and meter of the rest of the poem, and (b) to love, which was "always there."

But why weren't we told? The love was "always there," but why does the sadistic "giant hand" obscure the love until we are at last "made aware" [how? by whom? and why then?] after agonies of aloneness, which the giant hand imposes, when we're "given breath, and it takes our breath away" (marvelous line)?

In my experience, love has always been in full view, like the sun, and I have often turned my back on it, more comfortable in the shadows it casts.... Mary

Thanks, Xiousgeonz. I read the Bob Brooks piece. Fascinating. Makes me realize I should have said something about how "becoming an expert" boosts one's self-esteem. Thanks! M

When you said "collect someting" I remembered Bob Brooks' idea of developing an "Island of competence." (http://www.ldonline.org/multimedia/transcripts/brooks ) Then you go and say "be an expert about something" -- yup! The shrinks agree.
